The catalyst in the digital transformation of pathology.
Explore the Bigpicture Platform

At a glance

  • Building a trusted European platform for digital pathology.
  • Bringing pathology data, tools, standards and expertise together.
  • Enabling organizations to contribute, discover and use pathology data responsibly.
  • Connecting healthcare, research, industry and SMEs across Europe.

Why Bigpicture exists

Digital pathology is transforming the way diseases are studied, diagnosed and treated. Artificial intelligence has the potential to improve diagnostics, accelerate biomedical research and drug development, and contribute to replacing, reducing and refining animal research.

Realizing this potential depends on access to large, diverse and well-described pathology datasets. Today, much of this data remains fragmented across organisations, collected and described in different ways, and difficult to access and use at scale. Bigpicture addresses this barrier by creating the conditions for pathology data to be contributed, discovered and used responsibly across Europe.

How Bigpicture creates impact

Bigpicture brings together pathology data, common standards, secure technology and specialist expertise within a collaborative European environment. By making data easier to contribute, understand and use across organisations, Bigpicture helps reduce some of the technical, legal and practical barriers that currently limit large-scale digital pathology research.

This enables researchers, healthcare organizations, industry and technology partners to work with pathology data in a more consistent and responsible way, supporting AI development, validation and biomedical research across Europe.

What Bigpicture delivers today

Bigpicture is already putting the different components of its digital pathology infrastructure into practice. Real data contributions, research use cases and collaboration across the consortium are helping to test and continuously refine the platform, workflows and governance. This includes:

  • A growing pathology data repository containing clinical and non-clinical images and associated metadata.
  • Common data and metadata approaches that make collections from different organizations easier to describe, understand and combine.
  • Secure workflows for data contribution and access, developed through practical experience with contributing organizations.
  • Tools and research capabilities that support data discovery, analysis, AI development and benchmarking.
  • Governance, ethical and legal frameworks that define how data can be contributed, accessed and used responsibly.

Our values

A European partnership

Bigpicture began as a European public-private research initiative bringing together organizations with expertise in pathology, healthcare, data science, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, technology, ethics and governance. The consortium includes academic institutions, hospitals and healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical companies, SMEs, technology partners and public organizations from across Europe. Together, these organizations are contributing datasets, developing technology and standards, testing workflows and establishing the governance needed to make Bigpicture work in practice. The current project is also preparing Bigpicture for its next phase, with the ambition of supporting a broader European community of data contributors, researchers and collaborators in the future.
