The catalyst in the digital transformation of pathology.
Explore the Bigpicture Platform

At a glance

  • Building a trusted European platform for digital pathology.
  • Bringing pathology data, tools, standards and expertise together.
  • Enabling organizations to contribute, discover and use pathology data responsibly.
  • Connecting healthcare, research, industry and SMEs across Europe.

Why Bigpicture exists

Digital pathology is changing how diseases are studied, diagnosed and treated. AI can support better diagnostics, biomedical research, drug development and the replacement, reduction and refinement of animal research. Progress depends on access to large, diverse and well-described pathology datasets. Bigpicture helps overcome today’s fragmentation by making data easier to contribute, discover and use responsibly across Europe.

How Bigpicture creates impact

Bigpicture brings together pathology data, common standards, secure technology and specialist expertise within a collaborative European environment. By making data easier to contribute, understand and use across organisations, Bigpicture helps reduce some of the technical, legal and practical barriers that currently limit large-scale digital pathology research.

This enables researchers, healthcare organizations, industry and technology partners to work with pathology data in a more consistent and responsible way, supporting AI development, validation and biomedical research across Europe.

What Bigpicture delivers today

Bigpicture is already putting its digital pathology infrastructure into practice through real data contributions, research use cases and operational workflows. This includes:

  • A growing repository of clinical and non-clinical pathology data.
  • Common data and metadata standards.
  • Secure workflows for data contribution and access.
  • Tools for discovery, analysis, AI development and benchmarking.
  • Legal, ethical and governance frameworks for responsible data use.

A European partnership

Bigpicture is built by a European public-private consortium spanning healthcare, research, industry, technology, ethics and governance. Partners contribute data, develop technology and standards, test workflows and help shape the governance needed to make Bigpicture work in practice. The current project is also preparing the foundation for a broader European community of data contributors, researchers and collaborators in the future.
