Funded through the Innovative Medicines Initiative

Bigpicture receives funding through the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking (IMI2 JU), a public-private partnership supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program and EFPIA. This model combines public research and healthcare expertise with knowledge and resources from the pharmaceutical and technology sectors. For Bigpicture, it provides the scale and range of expertise needed to address the scientific, technical, legal and organizational challenges involved in making pathology data available for research across Europe.

What the program makes possible

Bigpicture’s funding supports work across data contribution, technical infrastructure, standards, governance and research. It allows partners across Europe to develop and test these elements together rather than as separate institutional solutions. This work is establishing the shared technical and governance foundations needed to make diverse pathology data accessible and usable for research and AI development across organizations.

Meet the consortium partners

Building beyond the current project

The funded project is establishing and testing the infrastructure, processes and governance needed for Bigpicture to operate in practice. At the same time, the consortium is preparing for Bigpicture’s longer-term role beyond the current project, with the ambition of preserving the infrastructure, expertise and collaborations that have been established and supporting a broader European digital pathology community in the future.
