About Francesco Ciompi

Francesco Ciompi, Bigpicture WP4 Lead, is an Associate Professor in Computational Pathology and Research Group Leader in AI for Precision Medicine at Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen. His research focuses on artificial intelligence for precision medicine in pathology, including predictive biomarkers in immuno-oncology and computer-aided diagnosis for large-scale digital pathology.

He holds Master's degrees in Electronic Engineering (University of Pisa) and Computer Vision and AI (Autonomous University of Barcelona), earning a PhD (cum laude) from the University of Barcelona in 2012. Since joining Radboudumc in 2013, Francesco has co-led the Computational Pathology Group, securing numerous prestigious grants, including an NWO VIDI grant and the AMMODO Science Award for his work in AI for digital pathology.

Francesco is also active in education, serving as a guest lecturer and coordinator for the Master’s course Intelligent Systems in Medical Imaging at Radboud University. Besides his lead role in Bigpicture, Francesco also leads other AI-focused initiatives in projects like IMAGIO, and HEREDITARY and organizes international workshops, including the TIGER challenge and COMPAY workshops. Additionally, he contributes to editorial boards and professional groups, such as the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group.
