Pioneering pathology: the power of partnership
Bigpicture stands as a shining example of collaboration, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence. The project has brought together a consortium of partners from all corners of the academic and private sectors. It is these partnerships that Bigpicture’s success depends on. We spoke with Nikolas Stathonikos, Principal Investigator of Digital Pathology and AI at the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU), who sheds a light on his role and experiences working as a partner in the Bigpicture project.
A partnership with UMCU
Armed with a master's degree in medical imaging and image processing, Nikolas Stathonikos embarked on a career at the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU). Over the course of 12 years, Nikolas transitioned through various roles, ultimately focusing on digital pathology and AI implementation. His former experience with comparable projects and background knowledge paved the way for his involvement in the Bigpicture project. Representing UMCU as a partner in the project, Stathonikos was part of the team that drafted the proposal and conceptualized the ambitions of Bigpicture, demonstrating the commitment and involvement that connects all partners in this project.
Navigating complex workflows and collaborations
As part of work package 3 (WP3), Stathonikos's responsibilities include gathering data, ensuring its accessibility, and harmonizing metadata and tools among diverse workflows and data types. These tasks are not without its challenges, as clinical and non-clinical domains have distinct workflows and data types.
Stathonikos’ expertise in data preparation, coding, and AI research comes to the forefront as he collaborates with others to test tools for metadata and DICOM format conversion. He is actively involved in coordinating the upload of datasets into the Bigpicture platform and setting up demonstrator use cases which require a holistic approach, spanning from data analysis to the creation of AI models. “These use cases involve more than just uploading datasets; we need to manage an entire project from start to finish in alignment with the other work packages.”
Addressing the challenge of metadata standardization, Stathonikos emphasizes the importance of developing tools that work effectively for everyone involved. He envisions that data quality and accessibility are key, even if it requires an initial investment of time and effort. "Focusing on quality might require more work," he notes, "but it will set a higher standard for data storage and submission, ultimately creating a more valuable ecosystem. The existence of a high-quality repository will set a new standard for data excellence."
Bigpicture’s core values in action
Stathonikos's insights also shed light on the broader values that the Bigpicture project embodies: inclusivity, sustainability, connectivity, collaboration, reliability, and trustworthiness.
On an inclusive level, the project bridges gaps between various institutes from across Europe. “The project's structure nurtures cross-work package collaboration, promoting connectivity and collaboration. Task forces and workgroups are open spaces for experts to exchange ideas, ensuring that decisions are made collectively and transparently.” The reliability and trustworthiness of the project are strengthened by the expertise of its participants.

Through his work for the Bigpicture project, Stathonikos underscores the valuable learning experiences for him and his department. “The project has broadened my perspective, especially with regards to the clinical research that I wouldn't typically encounter in my role. Bigpicture allowed me to collaborate with other labs, seeing how they work, how they capture data, enriching our understanding of different methodologies and approaches.”
