The WP1 objective is to efficiently manage the Bigpicture partnership and to ensure successful dissemination of the project results.
WP1 partners are responsible for overall management of the project. It is WP1 primairy task to ensure that the Bigpicture consortium implements and fulfils all the requirements and obligations towards IMI and our partnering organizations to create maximum impact of the work performed under the action.
Secondly, WP1 ensures successful collaboration between the 45 public and private beneficiaries and facilitates project & stakeholder meetings. Additionally, WP1 organizes an effective consortium governance and legal framework.
WP1 is responsible for internal and external communication strategy and implementation thereof as well as the dissemination of results during the course of the action.
‘AI is still in its infancy, but will have a big role in the future in supporting the specialists with diagnostics and treatment options’ says Jeroen van der Laak. The development of AI relies on data, which is not easy to come by. Besides, there are legal and ethical requirements to take into account regarding the safety and privacy of patients’ data. Bigpicture has set a goal of gathering 3 million images for its repository. It should be a variety of images on all sorts of body tissues and disease as well as animal tissues from non-clinical studies to make sure AI algorithms can be as widely applicable and accurate as possible. ‘A heterogenic dataset will ensure that algorithms can be used on a larger scale, and this is what we really want to pursue with Bigpicture.’
‘The next big thing in our field will be computational pathology’ predicts Pierre Moulin. ‘How can we use computers to figure out what makes a patient different when our human brains fall short? The repository of pathology slides will enable the development of AI models. The purpose of the platform is to enable and catalyze research in AI-pathology – we envision that pathologists will work closely with data scientists and computer scientist to create a community of Bigpicture users. We are bringing academic researchers and commercial parties, the clinical and the non-clinical, together. Eventually, we want to be able to make the pathology slides accessible for the broader community.’
