The Bigpicture Repository

To achieve its goals, the Bigpicture project will first create the infrastructure needed to store, share and process millions of image files. Secondly, it will address legal and ethical issues to ensure patient privacy and data confidentiality issues are fully respected.

The Bigpicture repository

Bigpicture's infrastructure will be GDPR-compliant-by-design, and consist of a central repository and several connected federated repositories. The central repository will be built in national academic computer centers in Finland and Sweden. Data stored in this centralised repository will be fully anonymised,  which has several advantages:  

  • Allows for inclusion of existing large and locally important data collections without making additional copies;

  • Allows for storing data that may be difficult or impossible by legal definition to anonymise, such as datasets from rare diseases;

  • Provides the ability to complement stored data with additional information

This will allow for higher quality data, more data, and a higher growth rate of the amount of data
