Join the AI revolution during the Bigpicture Community Meeting

08 May, 2024

“It's all about democratizing AI development,” says Katrien Grünberg, Bigpicture co-coordinator and professor of Pathology Department at Radboudumc, about the transformative journey of the Bigpicture project. The field of pathology, is rapidly evolving, and artificial intelligence has a main role to play. With the first Bigpicture Community Meeting on the horizon, Katrien invites the wider community to join and connect with Bigpicture.

This is a chance to get involved, contribute, and shape the future of pathology.

Fostering growth in computational pathology

When Katrien started her pathology journey in 2000, the field was taking off in molecular diagnostics. 15 years later, pathology once again was on the verge of a breakthrough. "I still remember when I met Jeroen van der Laak (WP1) at Radboudumc. He and his co-workers demonstrated AI's potential to identify metastasis in lymph nodes. It was the start of a deep learning revolution in pathology. To witness and be part of this emerging landscape is exhilarating," Katrien says.

Early on, it became clear that collaboration and open competition catalyzed the progress in the field. However, access to high-quality pathology data was already a rate-limiting step. "When the EU IMI call came, we recognized this was a solution not just for us but to help keep the entire research field of pathology," she says. It's this collaborative, inclusive vision and reciprocity that drives Bigpicture — to level the playing field for researchers, startups, and larger companies, and to nurture a thriving community.

Joining the coming Community Meeting

Bigpicture has reached its midterm stage, and its impact is emerging. Katrien: "We've been building something extraordinary for the global community. Our goal is to make data accessible, not just for the few but for many, enabling a collective advancement in pathology, and it's time to showcase this and reflect on what the community envisions for the future.”

Led by Bigpicture Leads (WP1) Jeroen van der Laak (Radboudumc) and Julie Boisclair (Novartis), the meeting promises to be the opportunity for the community to truly get involved. "Attendees will get an insider's view of our achievements and our roadmap for the future," Katrien states.

An open invitation to stakeholders

Katrien emphasizes that everyone, from patient advocates to AI developers, researchers, and regulators, is welcome to join and contribute their valuable perspectives. "Bigpicture's vision is to elevate global diagnostics, push the boundaries of AI in pathology, and save lives. It is through collective effort and community engagement that we can shape innovative tools and solutions for the future."
